SUMMARY:Museum of Space History's Great Southwest Star Party 2023 — Free Event
DESCRIPTION:The Sun to Put on Special Show for Great Southwest Star Party!\n\nAnnular Eclipse at the NM Museum of Space History\nWhat: The sun is scheduled to put on a special annular eclipse to kick off the Great Southwest Star Party\, featuring a deep partial eclipse with over 90% of the sun’s surface covered by the moon. Organizers of the Star Party were delighted to hear of the sun’s participation in the event and noted that it’s unusual for the sun to take part in a Star Party\, even though it’s the largest star around. \nEven with the sun mostly hidden behind the moon\, it’s still dangerous to look directly at it\, so the Museum of Space History will be providing free eclipse glasses to the first 1000 attendees. \nAstronomy League members will have telescopes with solar filters to view the annular eclipse and a special telescope inside the League’s new observatory will show the sun in Hydrogen-alpha\, which is a specific wavelength of visible light. Those images will be broadcast live on a large screen monitor at the observatory. \nWhen: Saturday\, October 14\, 2023\, beginning at 9:00 am. Maximum obscuration (when the annular eclipse is at its peak) in the Alamogordo area will be at 10:39 am\, although it begins at 9:14 am. The sun is scheduled to end its show at roughly 12:13 pm. \nWhere: At the Museum of Space History in Alamogordo. Activities will be held at the museum’s new observatory complex\, which is in the upper parking lot below the main building. The observatory is expected to be opened later that afternoon. \nWhy: The Great Southwest Star Party (and eclipse viewing!) is a great way to learn more about the skies above us. Viewing the annular eclipse at the museum offers an opportunity to see it in a whole new light\, through the lenses of specially equipped telescopes. \nSponsored by the Museum of Space History’s Astronomy League\, the all day and into the night Great Southwest Star Party continues throughout the day with speaker sessions\, special planetarium programs\, and an evening star party. All events are free to the public\, including admission to the museum and planetarium. \nEVENT SCHEDULE:\nDate of event: Saturday\, October 14th\, 2023\nLocation: The New Mexico Museum of Space History \nDescription:  \nThe Great Southwest Star Party 2023 will take place on the campus of the New Mexico Museum of Space History on Saturday\, October 14th. This year’s event will feature viewing of the annular eclipse\, speakers\, the opening of the new observatory complex\, and an evening star party. SUMMARY:“Oppenheimer After Trinity” to Premier at New Horizons Theater
DESCRIPTION:What: The Museum of Space of Space History is pleased to present the award-winning documentary Oppenheimer After Trinity at the New Horizons Dome Theater. Oppenheimer After Trinity is a thought-provoking and insightful documentary that explores events that occurred after the testing of the world’s first atomic bomb in July of 1945. The documentary offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the mind of Dr. J Robert Oppenheimer\, and the moments leading up to and following the first atomic bomb test in the New Mexico desert. The film features rare footage and photographs\, along with compelling testimony from Dr. Oppenheimer’s grandson\, Charles Oppenheimer. \nProduced by Alamogordo native and award-winning producer Larry L. Sheffield\, Oppenheimer After Trinity has garnered 17 international film awards to date. Sheffield’s first film\, Alamogordo\, Center of the World\, Trinity 1945\, won recognition in four film festivals. This film is part of a series of documentaries about events that happened in New Mexico around the Manhattan Project\, the Trinity Site Test\, Operation Paperclip\, and other military events that shaped human history between 1945-1950. Sheffield’s films are known for their use of rare footage\, photographs\, and compelling interviews\, combined with his unique talent for bringing history to life on the big screen. \nWhen: Friday\, October 20\, at 11:40 am\, 1:00 pm\, 3:40 pm\, and 5:00 pm; Saturday\, October 21\, at 11:40 am\, 1:00 pm\, and 3:40 pm; and Sunday\, October 22 at 1:00 pm and 2:20 pm.  (Did you know…there’s a GREAT chance you might meet Producer/Director Larry Sheffield and co-director Trent DiGiulio? Both of them plan to be on hand during the film’s showings!) \nWhere: At the New Horizons Dome Theater and Planetarium on the campus of the New Mexico of Space History in Alamogordo\, NM. Ticket prices are $8.00 for adults\, $7.00 for senior citizens\, military\, and New Mexico residents\, and $6.00 for children 4-12 with 3 and under free.  \nWhy: Film producer Larry Sheffield was raised in Alamogordo and has strong community ties. His presentation of this documentary offers a personal take on this historic event not only because he grew up in the area but also because of the rare insights provided by Oppenheimer’s own grandson. With the semi-annual trip to Trinity Site on Oct. 21\, it seemed appropriate to screen an award-winning film of this calibre in an effort to give that world changing event a human aspect.  \nUnlike the recent feature film Oppenheimer\, this documentary offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the mind of Dr. J Robert Oppenheimer\, and the moments leading up to and following the first atomic bomb test in the New Mexico desert. \nAbout the New Mexico Museum of Space History: www.nmspacemuseum.org \nThe New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo is a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.
