SUMMARY:Museum of Space History's Great Southwest Star Party 2023 — Free Event
DESCRIPTION:The Sun to Put on Special Show for Great Southwest Star Party!\n\nAnnular Eclipse at the NM Museum of Space History\nWhat: The sun is scheduled to put on a special annular eclipse to kick off the Great Southwest Star Party\, featuring a deep partial eclipse with over 90% of the sun’s surface covered by the moon. Organizers of the Star Party were delighted to hear of the sun’s participation in the event and noted that it’s unusual for the sun to take part in a Star Party\, even though it’s the largest star around. \nEven with the sun mostly hidden behind the moon\, it’s still dangerous to look directly at it\, so the Museum of Space History will be providing free eclipse glasses to the first 1000 attendees. \nAstronomy League members will have telescopes with solar filters to view the annular eclipse and a special telescope inside the League’s new observatory will show the sun in Hydrogen-alpha\, which is a specific wavelength of visible light. Those images will be broadcast live on a large screen monitor at the observatory. \nWhen: Saturday\, October 14\, 2023\, beginning at 9:00 am. Maximum obscuration (when the annular eclipse is at its peak) in the Alamogordo area will be at 10:39 am\, although it begins at 9:14 am. The sun is scheduled to end its show at roughly 12:13 pm. \nWhere: At the Museum of Space History in Alamogordo. Activities will be held at the museum’s new observatory complex\, which is in the upper parking lot below the main building. The observatory is expected to be opened later that afternoon. \nWhy: The Great Southwest Star Party (and eclipse viewing!) is a great way to learn more about the skies above us. Viewing the annular eclipse at the museum offers an opportunity to see it in a whole new light\, through the lenses of specially equipped telescopes. \nSponsored by the Museum of Space History’s Astronomy League\, the all day and into the night Great Southwest Star Party continues throughout the day with speaker sessions\, special planetarium programs\, and an evening star party. DESCRIPTION:Where No Man Has Gone Before: 55 Years of Star Trek\n(Alamogordo\, New Mexico\, October 28\, 2021) – The New Mexico Museum of Space History is pleased to announce that its popular Launch Pad Lecture speaker series will resume on November 5th\, after a hiatus of more than a year and a half due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first program will be “Where No Man Has Gone Before: 55 Years of Star Trek.” It will be held on the second floor of the museum beginning at 9:00 am and is free to the public. \nMuseum Executive Director Christopher Orwoll will present the program and discuss the creation and lasting legacy of Gene Roddenberry’s “Star Trek.” The original series\, first airing in 1966\, spawned a plethora of spin-off television shows\, feature length films\, books\, comics\, and even museum exhibits.  Orwoll will look at the continuing fascination with the world of Star Trek and even preview the museum’s new Sci-Fi/Sci-Fact exhibit that will incorporate elements of Rodenberry’s vision of a better future. \nGene Roddenberry was inducted into the museum’s International Space Hall of Fame in 2016. An exhibit dedicated to him remains a popular attraction at the museum\, with visitors from across the world taking advantage of the photo opportunity presented by the transporter mock-up. \nThe Launch Pad Lecture begins at 9:00 am on the museum’s first floor and is free to the public. SUMMARY:Museum to Re-open on Friday\, May 7th
DESCRIPTION:(Alamogordo\, New Mexico) – The New Mexico Museum of Space History\, a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs\, is pleased to announce that it will re-open to the public on National Space Day\, Friday\, May 7. The Museum will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday\, closed on Monday and Tuesday. A temporary reduced entry fee of $5 per person will be in effect\, due to ongoing renovation and other projects. Capacity will be limited.  \n“We are all very excited to welcome the public back into the museum\,” said Executive Director Christopher Orwoll. “While we have been closed\, there’s been a lot of work going on and it continues\, so we ask the public to pardon our dust as we continue much needed upgrades throughout the building.”    \nA majority of exhibits remain open\, and the newly renovated “Human Spaceflight Gallery” will open for the first time to the public. Located on the museum’s third floor\, the gallery highlights suits and equipment used for the world’s first excursions to space. Several never-before-seen artifacts from the museum’s archives will be on display\, including two items of particular interest to New Mexico: the Omega Chronograph watch worn by New Mexican astronaut Jack Schmitt during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972 and the EKG that John Glenn took at the Lovelace Clinic in Albuquerque just before becoming one of America’s first astronauts in 1960. More artifacts will be added to the gallery over the next couple of months. This gallery is the beginning of a five-year refurbishment to all the galleries and exhibits inside the museum.  \nConstruction will soon begin on a  major new exhibit\, “Science Fact vs. Science Fiction\,”   giving visitors  an unique opportunity to see an exhibit built from the ground up. The exhibit will feature both authentic spacesuits and those used in popular TV programs such as “Stranger Things.”  \nThe gallery will take another two or three months to finish and visitors will see artifact cases being installed and graphic elements being applied. The exhibit will feature both authentic spacesuits and those that were used in popular TV programs such as “Stranger Things”. Currently\, the gallery highlights International Space Hall of Fame Inductee Gene Roddenberry\, the creator of Star Trek.  \nThe International Space Hall of Fame Gift Shop inside the museum will also  re-open on May 7. The Space Hall Gift Shop inside the White Sands Mall will  continue to operate at that location. For more information\,  including online ordering\, visit  www.spacehalloffame.org.  \nConstruction projects either completed or underway on the grounds and inside the museum include xeriscaping along Highway 2001 and near campus buildings\, exhibit work inside the museum\, elevator replacement\, complete bathroom renovations\, electrical upgrades\, and security lights. The restrooms on the first floor of the museum are expected to remain closed through mid-June but those on the second and fourth floors will be open to the public. “Many of the projects going on now at the museum have been needed for years\, if not decades\,” said Orwoll. “Replacing our 40-year-old elevators was high on the list\, followed by renovating restrooms campus-wide\, and many other projects that would not have been possible without the support of the Legislature\, Department of Cultural Affairs\, and our community leaders.”  \nAccess to some areas will be limited or remain closed until further notice\, including museum interactive exhibits\, the New Horizons Theater\, Tombaugh Education Center classrooms\, the library\, collections storage\, playground\, and picnic/snack areas. Group visits\, public programs\, special events\, and volunteer/docent activities will continue in virtual formats only. Reduced occupancy might result in a wait to gain entry. While queuing for entry\, visitors should observe social distancing.
