Firefighters Remember 9/11 Heroes at Climb the Cube

Firefighters celebrate completing the Climb the Cube Challenge 2025

Even as heavy rain and lightning swept through the area, the spirit of remembrance proved stronger than the storm. More than 120 people gathered on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the New Mexico Museum of Space History for this year’s Climb the Cube, an annual event that honors the courage and sacrifice of first responders on 9/11. There to support and climb were firefighters from various fire departments: Ruidoso, High Rolls, Alamogordo, Holloman AFB, and even as far as Mesilla.

The day felt like a family reunion, filled with hugs, laughter, and camaraderie, but also marked by solemn reflection for the lives lost on September 11, 2001—including firefighters, police officers, EMTs, K9 units, and many others who rushed into danger. Those who took part in Climb the Cube ascended the symbolic 110 stories, the same number of floors inside the World Trade Center towers. Firefighters in the challenge wore full turnout gear, some carrying packs and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.

Alamogordo Fire Department Deputy Chief Liam Lashley, like many others, shared his personal connection to the 9/11 first responders during the tribute. “Everyone in this career field knows what it costs to give the ultimate sacrifice whenever it comes to saving people’s lives.  The ladies and gentlemen of 9/11 in New York City knew that when they responded to the Twin Towers that day.  I love that we have this event where we get to honor them.”

The event concluded with photos, shared stories, and fellowship among participants—celebrating both their accomplishment and the lives of those who inspired it. Organizers invite the community to take part in next year’s Climb the Cube.
