Fireworks Extravaganza Postponed to Friday, July 6

Limited Access Available to the Museum Grounds for Viewing

(Alamogordo, New Mexico, July 5, 2018) – Alamogordo’s annual July 4th Fireworks Extravaganza at the New Mexico Museum of Space History has been postponed until Friday July 6th. For the first time in recent memory, the event was cancelled on July 4th due to high winds and safety concerns. Museum Executive Director Chris Orwoll commented, “Safety is our number one priority and when it became apparent by 9:45 that the winds were not going to abate, we made the decision to postpone.”

Normally, the show would have been moved to the next day, July 5th, but because high winds, gusty conditions and lightning are expected for Thursday, the decision was made to wait until Friday when the forecast predicts significantly less wind and inclement weather. The museum will open its parking lots to museum members who previously purchased fireworks passes. Parking spaces will be reserved for them, and additional parking spaces will be opened to non-members as well until the parking lots are full. Access to the museum grounds will begin at 7:00 pm and end at 8:00 pm, when Highway 2001 will be closed until after the fireworks show.

This will be a “viewing only” event and tailgating will not be allowed in the parking lot for safety reasons, although guests are encouraged to bring lawnchairs and enjoy the show from the grounds around the base of the museum, rocket park and Astronaut Memorial Garden.

Museum members who purchased a parking pass for the fireworks show are asked to call the museum to confirm their attendance on Friday night. Parking places will be reserved for members who RSVP before 3:00 on Friday. For more information, contact the museum at the phone number listed below.
