International Space Hall of Fame

The International Space Hall of Fame (ISHF), an integral part of the New Mexico Museum of Space History, is the only institution that recognizes the accomplishments of the men and women worldwide who have contributed to man's quest for space. Established in 1976, the ISHF follows strict criteria for Inductees.

Selectees are chosen based upon whether or not they meet the criteria within the following categories:

  1. For Achievement
    • A single accomplishment that was made prior to the nomination which clearly advanced either space exploration or astronomical knowledge, OR
    • A career or lifetime pattern of achievement which significantly, and obviously, advanced either space exploration or astronomical knowledge; OR
    • A specific idea or achievement which had a significant effect on either space exploration or astronomical knowledge.
    • Groups may be selected to be recognized, such as mission crews or research or engineering teams.
  2. As a Visionary
    • An individual who anticipated the course of future events and clearly elucidated a probable course of activities to meet the needs of those times, and whose ideas or attitudes had a significant effect on either space exploration or astronomical knowledge.
  3. As a Pioneer
    • An individual who was not constrained by tradition but pursued an imaginative course or rationale that may or may not have proved accurate with the test of time, and whose efforts had a significant effect on either space exploration or astronomical knowledge. The Pioneer should have shown, like Robert Goddard, persistence and an unwillingness to accept defeat or failure.

Each fall, the ISHF inducts one or more individuals into its ranks. Nominations for potential inductees are accepted throughout the year. Nominees are reviewed by museum staff and the list of accepted nominees is referred to the Governor’s Commission to the New Mexico Museum of Space History for approval. Once approved, selectees and their nominators are notified by the museum’s executive director.
